‘Muhurta’, is a Hindu term which literally means an auspicious moment or time or period that is considered to be of prime importance in Hinduism. A holy moment is considered religiously before doing anything auspicious, whether it is a materialistic venture or a spiritual one. ‘Akshay Tritiya’ is one of the most auspicious ‘muhurta’ to begin any business activities, construction of a house or building a high rise. ‘Akshay’ means something that never reduces or diminishes. So, it is believed by Hindu people that anything good done on this ‘tithi’ brings most assertive results. Buying gold on this ‘tithi’ brings prosperity at household, it is believed widely by Hindus. It is also called one of the “Swayam Siddh Muhurat” that is extremely auspicious and suitable for any kind of ventures. No other perimeters are required to consider on this muhurat for extracting maximum most output.
It comes in the third lunar day (Tithi) of bright lunar half, “Shukal Paksh”, of Baishakh month of Hindu calendar. Another significance of this day is as birthday of Lord Parashurama, the sixteenth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Devi Annapurna was also born on this pious day. Krishna Dwaipayana Veda Vyasa started writing the epic ‘Mahabharata’ with the help of lord Ganesha on this very auspicious day only. It is mentioned in the ‘MahaBharata’ that Yudhishthira received the “Akshay Patra” on this very day, which he used to feed the needy people of his kingdom.
In the eastern part of our country, in West Bengal, it is a widely celebrated festival for business people and shopkeepers to begin their new book of accounts from this day to bring prosperity and good luck throughout the year. Worshipping Lord Ganesha is a must ritual to open new book of accounts and reap good amount of profits during the coming business year. Whereas in the western part of our country, in Gujarat, they called it “Akha Teej” and consider this day as a most auspicious one to offer special Puja to Lord Ganesh Ji and Goddess Lakshmi Ji. They take holy dip in sacred rivers, give alms to poor people and perform yagnas and so on.
